Urban Design Panel on supportive housing tower at 8th. and Arbutus scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021

Now that the rezoning application for a 13-storey, 140-unit supportive housing tower at 2086-2098 W. 7th and 2091 W. 8th has been submitted to the City, the public can attend an Urban Design Panel (UDI) presentation of the application on Wednesday, Nov. 10th. The public are invited as observers only. If you would like to weigh in on the proposed development, you have until Sunday, Nov. 21 to take the virtual tour and post comments on the City Shape your City portal. Read the important CityHall Watch post for background.

The tower will provide housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness. Units are planned as single-occupancy studios, and meals will be provided. The building will be run by non-profit operators and provide basic treatment for residents, which include those with addiction and mental health issues.

The community group kitsilanoforfamilies says the City is side-stepping the democratic process by not taking into account feedback from concerned neighbours or the community-at-large.

They say there is no indication there will be necessary on-site services advocated by mental health and addictions professionals to ensure a successful transition to stable housing.

The development proposal, which was originally 12 storeys, has increased to 13 storeys and with a significantly larger and more imposing footprint than the original concept.

The UDI meeting will be held at the Joe Wai meeting room at City Hall beginning at 4:20 pm.
