UKRA kicks off flyer campaign, hoping to reach every resident in the neighbourhood

The following flyer, created by the Upper Kitsilano Residents Association, informs residents about the City’s Streamlining Rental Plan, which will likely go to public hearing this fall. The plan calls for six-storey mixed-use units on arterials, and four-to-five storey apartments on side streets. Map above shows the affected areas of the city: dark blue and light blue lines indicate where increased density can take place; greyed-out areas are not affected; red lines indicate shopping areas.

HELP SAVE OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

We’ve told you about the zoning and densification plans coming to our neighbourhood. Those changes could now come as early as this fall.

  • The City’s Streamlining Rental Plan is quietly being pushed through under the guise of increasing affordable housing.
  • What you should know: The Plan is not about building more affordable units for those who desperately need them;
  • It’s about big business. It’s about developers, large corporations, real estate investment trusts and pension funds taking control of our neighbourhoods, tearing down perfectly liveable character houses and renting them out for huge profits.

Clearly, the plan benefits these groups at the expense of the public good.

If Council approves the plan, we will see the beginning of land assemblies, four-to-five-storey apartments and multiplexes on quiet side streets near arterials, up to six storeys on arterials —without any guarantee of affordability.

It means:

  • Loss of character homes and “demoviction” of existing tenants
  • Losing life-sustaining 100-year-old trees, their cooling shade and green space
  • Being stripped of any influence over what happens to your neighbourhood
  • Waking up to find that an apartment block or multiplexes have dwarfed your house and compromised your privacy
  • Suffering the harmful effects of year-round demolition and construction noise.

The changes could come as soon as this fall. That means demolitions. Here. In weeks, not months. And once again:

  • Neighbourhood plans and visions have been ignored,
  • No meaningful consultation has taken place, and
  • No notifications have been issued to the residents on streets directly affected.

Tell Mayor Stewart and Council you oppose this ill-conceived plan, which they have already approved in principle.

The more neighbours speak out against it, the greater our chances of success.

Say NO to the plan!
